Laundry is a comfort because, unlike so many things, laundry is a constant. They say that nothing is forever, but I think laundry will be there until the day I die.
I have a top load washing machine which I recently learnt in Hong Kong Sign Language is called a Japanese Washing Machine, at the same time I learnt this, I also learnt that there is a difference between top and front washing machines. I had no idea. But I guess it’s true. Distinctions like these remind me how complicated life can be sometimes.
I also like that sometimes in conversation people forget what these ubiquitous yet obscure machines are called. You can see that it’s right on the tip of their tongue, but they can’t quite reach the word, especially after a long day at IKEA, so they give up and just call them Laundry Machines. Laundry Machine sounds as if you have a machine which produces dirty clothes rather than launders them. Of course, I never point this out because that would be petty, especially after a long day at IKEA.
