I was chatting with someone I matched with on Tinder. They said that they had never heard of Miyazaki or seen a Studio Ghibli movie before. I didn’t let on that I was in total shock. This is Hong Kong, doesn’t everyone here know of Miyazaki? We are close enough to the motherland of Japan, aren’t we? I thought about watching a Miyazaki film with them. But then thought better of it. There should be a word for if something hasn’t taken place in your childhood, or hasn’t taken place far enough back in the past, then you can be sure that there is no hope for being able to appreciate it now or ever, even if you were to do that thing this very minute. It’s something to do with nostalgia but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Yet another false positive from Tinder. I felt that these thoughts should end with a sigh so I allowed myself one. It scared a fly off the wall. Then I stood up to make lunch. Ravioli today.
