There are some milestones one can only reach in the company of oblivious lawyers. Tonight’s was me paying 400 HKD for my share of an underwhelming Peking Duck served in the basement of the Landmark. On the ferry, I allow myself forty seconds to contemplate how much money someone must make for such a feat to be pulled off so casually. I conclude forty seconds is not enough.
Afterwards, I hear the voice of a dear friend reminding me that I could have just checked the prices before agreeing to the reservation.
Yes, but that would take the thrill out of the gamble of life, now, wouldn’t it? I say to no one on my walk home. Now is the uphill part so it took me a while to think of a reply.
The second comeback is quicker: Someday we will all be dead, and money won’t matter anyway.
It is a very Buddhist way for one to lead one’s life, this oblivious lawyer.
I reach the top of the hill and think perhaps he’s enlightened. Then I look up. Full moon tonight.
