Yayoi Kusama’s signature look is dots. At M+ I learn to see Kusama in the Lamma ferry seats. The outdoor ones have 1,050 holes which are empty dots. Because who knows what she was drawing anyway - holes or dots? In Japanese the word is the same for both.
No, I made that up. 1,050 holes is real though. And just think what they’ve seen over the years. It would be wrong if I told you that each hole or dot has its own story.
Because they are not individuals.
They are collectives.
Collectives called seats.
Each seat holds a person, and that person a story.
A woman sitting on 1,050 holes in front of me checks who has seen her story on Instagram. She also speaks in Spanish and talks as if she has seen it all. The others with her speak in the same way. All of it has been seen before, especially if you are the one speaking. If you are the one listening, you must convey that while you may have seen it before, why, you must admit, you’ve never heard anyone say it better! There is a lot of shrugging, head tilting, and talking while laughing. This is the signature Spanish look, talking while laughing. It’s less consistent than Kusama’s.
